Share The Word
Rev Albert Kang
The Lord has given us the Word so that it can help us grow spiritually. That is not just His primary purpose because He also desires that we share the Word with others. Our knowledge of God's Word cannot be confined only to meeting our own needs. There are countless others who have no opportunity to listen to the Word of God and they need us to share with them. The Lord said, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” (Matthew 9:37 ). We should therefore sign up to be workers in God's harvest field.
You might be wondering whether you have to leave your job or family so that you will share the Word of God with people in a faraway land. Unless God has specifically called you to be a missionary, the chances are that you would not need to do so. The very place where you are living or working is the mission field for you. Firstly, you have your family members and your next-door neighbors to share God's Word. Then apart from these, who else can you share with? How about the people whom you meet while on the way to market? What about the barber who cut the hairs of your children or the grocers who serve you at the grocery shop?
One homemaker, who attends Dr. Yongii Cho's church in Korea , spent her free time helping the residents at her apartment to ride the elevator. She is not paid to be a lift-attendant but she finds it rewarding because she is able to share God's Word with these residents. Her home soon became a home cell where many of these residents attend. She is glad that quite a few of the residents have given their lives to the Lord because of her humble effort as a unpaid lift-attendant.
An old lady in America , who had become crippled, was at a loss as how she could serve God. Then an idea struck her – she could use the telephone to share God's Word. As she had a good voice and knew old hymns, she decided to take up a small advertisement in the local papers, informing people to call her if they wanted to listen to some old hymns over the telephone. At first there were only a few calls. However, by sheer words of mouth, the news spread about her special ministry that she was receiving more calls in a day than what she used to get in a week. After the singing her hymns, she was able to share God's Word with the callers. Her ministry began to expand from singing hymns to sharing of God's Word and even counseling.
You can even share God's Word over the Internet. I have learned how to develop websites so that I could put all my articles for the world to read. All these efforts may not bring me financial gain but they are definitely blessing people who want to read the Word of God from an Asian perspective. I have since received many encouraging emails from readers who were being encouraged by the articles to love God and His Word more.
No Limit To Creativity
There is no limit to the creative ways by which we can share God's Word. It all depends upon our determination and imagination. We have a message to declare and we cannot hide it any more. In Isaiah 40:9 we read, “Get yourself up on a high mountain, O Zion, bearer of good news, Lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; Lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah , Here is your God!”
Some days, God will ask you what have you done with the Word that He has given you. Will you be able to declare like the Psalmist, “I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your loving kindness and Your truth from the great congregation” (Psalm 40:10)? Are you the bearer of good news? If not, you can start today and learn how to be an effective bearer of good news.
Here are some principles on how you can effectively share the Word of God with others.
Principle No.1 – Sharing The Word With The Guidance Of The Holy Spirit
The God who made the whole universe is concerned about human souls. He has sent His Holy Spirit to guide you in doing your task of sharing the supernatural Word of God. He will guide you to the right person who needs to listen to your message. Anyone who has any experience in sharing God's Word should know that his or her responsibility is to share the Word and then to leave the rest of the result to the Holy Spirit. Therefore whether the person receives the salvation of Christ or not, you primary task is the plant the seeds. He or she may not accept immediately but we have to trust the Holy Spirit in bringing the conviction at the right time and right place.
Principle No.2 – God's Word Should Be The Basis Of Your Sharing
The Bible is the anointed Word of God and therefore if you needed some anointing before you share the Gospel, go to the Word. The Word is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16 ) and when you read it, spiritual empowerment will happen within your spirit. Where there are dry and parched areas of your soul, the Word of God will fully watered and enriched it so that you may be refreshed. Every time, before I preach God's Word, I would spend time to meditate upon it. I do not just want to be soaked with God's Word but with the Shekinah glory of God. You can do likewise.
Principle No. 3 – Everyone Can Be A Witness For God's Word
You do not need to attend Bible Seminary to be a witness for Christ. The Holy Spirit can give you the necessary Word to share with your friends. When I was saved, I hardly knew much of God's Word. But that did not stop me from sharing what little I knew. My friends and loved ones were saved one by one, even though my message was simple. That is the amazing thing about God's Word. It is simple enough for a five-year old to understand and tough enough for thousands of Bible scholars to study it in depth.
Principle No. 4 – Not All Seeds Will Germinate
Yes, there will be disappointment and rejection but you are not the first to experience that. Even Paul the Apostle failed in some of his evangelistic effort. For example, when Paul shared his testimony and God's Word with King Agrippa, he almost but failed to convince the monarch (Acts 26). Even though not all the seeds will germinate into fruitful plants, we still need to share the Word relentlessly. No seed will ever get a chance to grow if it is not being planted. We cannot speculate who will receive and who will not receive the Word. Only God knows what the seed will do in a person's heart.
Principle No 5 – Perseverance And Persistency Are Important
Sharing the Word of God is not an easy task. You will receive rejection and even persecution. The sinful world is not willing to let go of its inhabitants without a fight. However, if we persist and persevere, we will win one soul at a time. Do not expect people to turn to Christ on the very first encounter. It seldom happens. Share the Word prayerfully with the person and then allow God to do His work in his or her life.
Principle No. 6 – Pray And Visit
Sharing the Word is quite similar to planting a seed. The seed needs water and sunshine to grow healthy. Your prayer is like the sunshine. Your fellowship with this person is like water. One is from the sky and the other is from the ground. Prayer is activating the supernatural power of God to affect the person's spirit while visitation is activating the natural to affect the person's life. Prayer shows God's care and visitation shows that you care.
It is through this regular prayer and contact that we provide added encouragement for him or her to make the right decision. Praying and visitation are powerful combination and we will see the positive result in time.
You can apply these six principles and see amazing results of souls being won to the Lord. Trust the Lord and He will empower you to be an anointed witness of God's Word.
